Following the Servant

Mark 11:1-11

Jerusalem is where God’s people lived and where they worshipped.  As Jesus enters Jerusalem on a colt in humility, many are there to bless him and rejoice that the kingdom of David has returned.  This event is so important it’s recorded in all four Gospel accounts (Matthew 21; Mark 11; Luke 19; John 12), but Jesus does not take any military action as the people would expect. 

“It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God. God chose him as your ransom long before the world began, but now in these last days he has been revealed for your sake.”

1 Peter 1:19, 20

We’d maybe rather have a Messiah that would and build our kingdom than One who would do His will and build His kingdom.

1. Jesus is always (11:1–3)

The Mount of Olives is a couple hundred feet higher than Jerusalem. 

Other than Jesus making His royal entry into Jerusalem from here, so much happened on the Mount of Olives:

-David’s retreat from Jerusalem (2 Samuel 15:30-32)

-Solomon grieved God by erecting idols for his foreign wives to worship (1 Kings 11:1-10)

-Ezekiel witnessed God’s glory (Ezekiel 11:23)

-Jesus wept over the blindness of Jerusalem (Luke 19:41-44)

-The disciples witnessed Jesus’ ascension into glory (Acts 1:9-12)

         -Jesus will return to this place (Zechariah 14:4, 5)

“God works all things according to the counsel of His will”                                       Ephesians 1:11

It even means that we can be composed in these crazy days because belongs to God and nothing that He wills can be stopped!

2. Jesus submits to the (11:4–7)

“Look, your King is coming to you; He is righteous and victorious, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.”                                                                                           Zechariah 9:9

3. Jesus personifies (11:7–8)

Selfishness can ruin a church, but genuine humility can it.

4. Jesus alone (11:9–10)

“Hosanna” means literally, “Save, I pray.”  It comes from Psalm 118:25, 26.  

Psalms 113-118 are known as the Egyptian Hallel psalms that were written as praises to God for redeeming His people, especially out of bondage from Egypt. 

Numbers 6:24-27

Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem fulfills all these prophecies: 2 Samuel 7:12-16, Isaiah 9:1-7, Isaiah 11:1-10, Jeremiah 23:5-8, Ezekiel 34:23, 24, and Micah 5:2-4.

Read Mark 11:1-11.  Read the above prophecies fulfilled here (under #4).  What parts of these prophecies do you think could have been fulfilled by any ordinary man who set his mind to do so?

Read Mark 11:1-11.  Why didn’t Jesus use His power and growing popularity to make a grand entrance

How might His ultimate mission have failed if He had done so?

Thursday

Read Mark 11:1-11.  What kind of Messiah did the people expect and want?

What kind of savior do people want today—what do they want relief from?

How does Jesus exceed those expectations?

Friday

Read Mark 11:1-11.  Read Zechariah 9:9. What was Jesus telling the crowds about His kingdom when He chose to ride a donkey into Jerusalem instead of a war-horse?

What does the reaction of the crowd in 11:9, 10 tell you about how they interpreted Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem?
