Milestones – Week 2
October 10, 2021John 4:7-26
Jesus’ next step with us often isn’t something we set out to do. It’s something he sets out to do in us.
“You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.” – Augustine, Confessions
The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.”
“So, we need both Spirit and truth – both the relational presence of Jesus and his community and the meaning-giving truth of our Rabbi’s mental maps.” – John Mark Comer, Live No Lies
Jesus’ next steps always have relational presence and meaning-giving truth.
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
Head
- Read John 4:1-26. Work together to describe the setting of this narrative, including the location, the history of the woman, the ethnicities involved, etc.
- Who initiates the interaction between the woman and Jesus? What is their motivation in this and why is this aspect of the narrative significant?
- Consider this quote from John Mark Comer’s book, Live No Lies. “So, we need both Spirit and truth – both the relational presence of Jesus and his community and the meaning-giving truth of our Rabbi’s mental maps.” As a group, discuss how relational presence and meaning-giving truth are essential in Jesus’ work in us.
Heart
- In what ways do you identify similarities between your thoughts, feelings, and beliefs and that of the woman?
- As you reflect on your relationship with Christ, what are some truths that God has revealed to you about yourself? What was the setting surrounding those moments?
Hands
- What is something that you think God is speaking to you at this moment or season in life? Is he inviting you to a deeper relational presence or to adopt a meaning-giving truth, or both?
