“Let’s keep a firm grip on the promises that keep us going. God always keeps his word” Hebrews 10:23

The Promise of Rest

Matthew 11
28-30 “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”

can burn you out

√ There is difference between and real rest

is possible with Jesus

R –  in Christ

“God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.” Ephesians 2:8–9 (NLT)

(Hebrews 4:9-11) There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; 10 for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his. 11 Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience.

Who you are in Christ…
√ You are chosen and adopted as a child of God

Ephesians 1:4-6 “For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will–to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves.”

√ You are someone who is deeply loved by God.

Galatians 2:20 “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”

√ You are seen as precious in the eyes of God

Isaiah 43:4 “Because you are precious in my eyes, and honored, and I love you, I give men in return for you, peoples in exchange for your life.”

E –

“Hurry is the great enemy of spiritual life in our day.”

The Hurry Cycle

(1) Christians are assimilating to a culture of busyness, hurry and overload

(2) God becoming more marginalized in Christians’ lives

(3) a deteriorating relationship with God

(4) Christians becoming even more vulnerable to adopting secular assumptions about how to live

(5) more conformity to a culture of busyness, hurry and overload. And then the cycle begins again.

Be still, and know that I am God… Psalm 46:10

(Luke 5:16) Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.
Jesus was not too busy!

S –

“We become what we give our attention to, for better or worse.”

2 Corinthians 10:12 they, measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.

Romans 12:1-2 MSG
1 So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life – your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life – and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. 2 Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.

T –

(Exodus 20:8-10) Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God.
