Better Together | Sermon One

Dr. Dean Ornish “The need for connection and community is primal, as fundamental as the need for air, water, and food.”

Albert Schweitzer “We are all so much together, but we are all dying of loneliness.”

Psychology Today “…loneliness increases the risk of death by 26%…”

Connecting with other people is crucial for us to experience the fullness of life.

George Gallup Jr. “Americans are…the loneliest people in the world.”

Loneliness and isolation are the norm.

“God saw that it was good.”

Genesis 1:31 “God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.”.

Genesis 2:18a “The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone…”.John Ortberg “I have never known anyone…who was isolated, lonely, unconnected, had no deep friendships – yet had a meaningful and joy-filled life.”

Genesis 2:18b (NLT)“…I will make a helper who is just right for him.”.

Bill Willits “God made people for himself, he also made us with a unique and real need for one another.”

A life connected to others provides 3 valuable benefits

1. We have help when we fall.

It is important to have a friend who you can count on when you stumble and fall in life.

Romans 3:23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: 10 If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.”

2. We have comfort in difficult times.

Romans 12:15 “Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep.” (NASB).

Galatians 6:2 “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”
3. They challenge us to develop spiritually.

The people we surround ourselves with will either pull us down or build us up.

1 Corinthians 15:33 “Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.”

Proverbs 27:17 “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”
