Questioning Jesus – Week 2

Question #2

Why do you look at the splinter in your brother’s eye but don’t notice the beam of wood in your own eye?

Observations:

1. It’s to focus on changes that others should make, but it’s not always to do so.

Why do we look at the splinter?

  • It’s easier to others than accept responsibility.
  • We often secretly struggle with the same .
  • We want to feel about ourselves.
  • Out of for others.

2. A huge part of following Jesus is viewing yourself with and learning to accept .

  • Matthew 7:4-5
  • Philippians 2:3-4
  • Romans 12:3
  • Matthew 7:1-2

3. When we learn to do so, we are finally capable of extending loving without

  • Matthew 7:5

Application:

1. yourself: Did I contribute to the problem? How can I help the conversation?

2. Accept for your shortcomings.

3. In love and humility, help one another and grow.

*Open by reading Matthew 7:1-5

  1. Why do we focus so much on the speck (i.e., the changes people need to make)? Why is it not always right to do so?
  2. Do you find it hard to accept blame? Why or why not?
  3. Why do you tend to focus on other people’s problems instead of your own?
  4. What are some ways that you remind yourself of your own struggles when you are tempted to focus on others instead of yourself?
  5. Do you regularly accept fault for contributing to problems with others? Explain.
  6. How would it be unhealthy if you did this too much or too little? Share.
  7. What are ways you can help avoid unnecessary/unhealthy conflict with others?
  8. Is there anyone that you need to reach out to and accept responsibility for your part in a problem?

* Close by asking the Lord to show you your shortcomings so you can lovingly help and be helped by the people in your life.
