Psalm 110: Jesus’ Favorite Passage

Why is this Psalm so important?

1. Most quoted Psalm in NT:

  • Quotes 33 times from Matthew to Revelation.
  • Psalm 110:4 is quotes 5 times in the New Testament.
  • Psalm 110 is quotes 10 times in Hebrews. There is a doctrinal thesis out that argues Hebrews is structured around Psalm 110.
  • At Pentecost Peter used this verse to prove that Jesus is the expected Messiah raised from the dead. (Acts 2:32-37)

2. Psalm 110 is a personal letter to Jesus on earth from God in heaven.

Ps 110:1: Literally: YHWH’s oracle to my Adoni. The word “Oracle” (ne’um) is WHISPER.

3. Jesus rested his heart in this Psalm. Gave him personal comfort. Jesus directly quoted it two times in the days before died.

Matthew 22:41-56

Jesus argument:
David is the author.

It is inspired by the Holy Spirit.

Question: How can the Messiah be David’s Lord if he is David’s son? A son cannot be greater than the father.

Answer: Hypostatic Union. Jesus has both a Divine and a human nature. As a human he is David’s son. As God, he is David’s Lord. The Psalm is a mystery. It’s a peek into the Godhead!

 

Why is this Psalm so comforting to Jesus?

  • It was a reminder God had not forgotten him. (Psalm 110:1)

  • It was a Promise: Of Victory. (Psalm 110:1)

The illusion to Joshua in 10:24.

Right now Jesus rules form God’s throne. It’s called his Session. At the Second Coming he will defeat every king. Paul uses this language in Philippains 2.

  • People Who Serve Him Gladly. (Psalm 110:3)

Coming in priest robes, see Revelation 19:14.

Like “dew” means many. There’s lots of dew in Israel. Jesus’ army will be numerous.

  • It defined his role. (Psalm 110:4)

He is a priest and a king. Walking in the shows of Melchizedek. (See Genesis 14:18-20)

–A King cannot be a priest. (2 Chronicles 26:16)

–Jesus serves in both roles. As Melchizedek did.

 

What does it mean Jesus is our “High Priest”

He gives us access to God.

1. That means he is WITH you.

2. Scriptures will speak to you.

He’s speaking through them.

3. He hears your prayers, answers. Talks.

Approach the throne with confidence.

4. Free to worship him, seek him, totally love him.

  • Wickedness will not Last. (Psalm 110:5-6)

Jesus used this Psalm when dealing with wicked men.
