Read Mark 7:14-23.  What is the relation of this section of verses and earlier in chapter 7, verses 1-13? Why?

The disciples refer to Jesus’ statement in this passage as a “parable”, why do you think they referred to his statements as that?

Read Mark 7:14-23. According to the teaching of Jesus here, what makes a person “defiled”?

How is this different than the Pharisees? How is this different than the world today?

What does the bible mean when it refers to the “human heart”?

Read Mark 7:14-23. Read through the list of sins in verse 21-22, what in this list sticks out to you? Why?

What is the significance of the verse 19’s parenthetical? What should we understand about this statement? (Refer to Acts 10)

Read Mark 7:14-23. In what way is Jesus’ teaching here radical? How does it differ and/or how is it similar with how our culture views the problems facing humanity?

In what ways do other religions focus on external actions as a solution? How is Christianity different from each of those religions?

Read Mark 7:14-23. in a foreign language if you are able.* In what ways does secular society focus on external actions as a solution? How is Christianity different from those secular ‘solutions’?

What is the biblical solution or remedy for this list of sinful heart conditions?

Why might simply ‘trying harder’ be inadequate and even counterproductive?
