Pride

Hebrew 12:1b “let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles…”

1 Peter 5:8 “The devil prowls around like a lion looking for someone to devour. He is stalking us and Looking for a way to take us down.”

Pride has been called the original sin.

Oswald Chambers said, “Pride is the sin of making self our God.”

There are two kinds of pride, and both of them are destructive to our soul.

  1. pride
  2. Pride that flies the radar

Grace is us getting what we don’t deserve.

Jesus got what we deserved on the cross.

1 John 2:15-16 “Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. For everything in the world–the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life–come not from the Father but from the world.”

How does the sin of pride destroy us?

1. Pride skews our version of

Luke 18:9-14

Galatians 6:3For if anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself.”

C.S. Lewis said, “humility is not thinking less of yourself, it’s thinking of yourself less.”

Romans 12:3 “Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves.”

2. Pride skews how we look at .

Proverbs 16:18 “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.”

3. It skews our relationship to and our relationship with .

How do we fight that kind of pride?

First we have to fight the lies we believe about ourselves.

Second, we must understand God and have a high view of God. He is holy, infinite, all powerful.

Matthew 20:1-16

Prayer

God, forgive me for my prideful ways. Forgive us for thinking it was about us. It has always been about you. Give us a healthy accurate view of ourselves so we can worship you in truth and spirit.
