The earliest versions of the Apostles’ Creed include this phrase

What was Jesus doing his death and resurrection?

18  For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit, 19  through whom also he went and preached to the spirits in prison 20  who disobeyed long ago…”   1 Peter 3:18-20 (NIV)

The resurrection of Jesus is the “firstfruits” of our future resurrection

But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 1 Cor 15:20 (NIV)

The resurrection of Jesus makes Christianity

For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4  that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,  1 Corinthians 15:3-4 (NIV)
