Being Fatherly

Ephesians 5:21, 25-33; 6:4-9

The world is longing for more fathers who resemble the Father.

I am writing this not to shame you but to warn you as my dear children. Even if you had ten thousand guardians in Christ, you do not have many fathers, for in Christ Jesus I became your father through the gospel. Therefore I urge you to imitate me. For this reason I have sent to you Timothy, my son whom I love, who is faithful in the Lord. He will remind you of my way of life in Christ Jesus, which agrees with what I teach everywhere in every church.

Being fatherly in Scripture…

Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ. (1 Corinthians 11:1)

Being fatherly is about what you do with imperfection, not perfection.

Head

• Read 1 Corinthians 4:14-17. Paul tells them that they have many guides and guardians, but not many fathers. What do you think is the point he is trying to make with this distinction? 
• Read Ephesians 5:21, 25-33; 6:4-9. Together as a group, make a list of the instructions and callings given to fathers.

Heart

• The message repeated the phrase “Being fatherly is about what you do with imperfection, not perfection.” How does that line resonate with you? What does it make you think about and feel? What does it make you want to do? 
• Share with the group about your relationship with your father. How has it impacted you and shaped who you are today? 
• Share with the group about other men who have become fatherly towards you.

• It’s never too early or too late. Who is someone who’s been fatherly towards you? What do you need to share with them this week?
