The Truth That Sets Us Free

2 Major Points:

1. Believing lies places us in bondage.
2. The Truth has the power to set us free.

God promises a special blessing:

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. (Psalm 1:1)

-Sad progression of lies:

Entrance of a lie —> dwelling on the lie —> believing the lie —> acting on the lie —> enslavement to the lie

-The Pathway from bondage to freedom:

1. Identify the area(s) of bondage / sinful behavior.
2. Identify the lie(s) at the root of that bondage / behavior.
3. Replace the lie(s) with Truth.

-The Truth has the power to:

1. overcome every lie
2. set us free
3. sanctify us

*Each time the Enemy bombards us with lies, we must learn to counsel our hearts according to the Truth and to act on the Truth, regardless of what our human reason or our feelings tell us.

Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free…If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. (John 8:31-32, 36)

-True freedom comes in a vital growing relationship with Jesus Christ!

-Within that relationship, we must know and choose to surrender to the Truth of God at all times.

Remove from me the way of lying…I have chosen the way of truth…(Ps. 119:29-30)

*Our desperate need is to be turned from the error of deceptive thinking on a regular basis:

Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him; Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins. (James 5:19-20)

Truths that Set Us Free:

1. God is good. Psalm 119:68 Thou art good, and doest good; teach me thy statutes.

2. God loves me and wants me to have His best. Romans 8:32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?

3. I am complete and accepted in Christ. Ephesians 1:6 …He hath made us accepted in the beloved.

4. God is enough. Ps. 23:1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

5. God can be trusted. Hebrews 13:5 …He hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

6. God doesn’t make any mistakes! Psalm 46:10 Be still, and know that I am God…Everything that comes into my life has been filtered through His fingers of love.

7. God’s grace is sufficient for me. 2 Corinthians 12:9 …My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness…

8. The blood of Christ is sufficient to cover all my sin 1 John 1:7…the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

9. The cross of Christ is sufficient to conquer my sinful flesh. Romans 6:6–7

Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

• I don’t have to sin. Rom. 6:14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

10. My past does not have to plague me. 1 Cor. 6:11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

11. God’s Word is sufficient to lead me, teach me, and heal me. Ps. 19:7; 119:105 The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple…Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

12. Through the power of His Holy Spirit, God will enable me to do anything that He commands me to do.

• There is no one I cannot forgive Mark 11:25 And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.
• I can give thanks in all things 1 Thess. 5:18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
• I can be content in every circumstance Heb. 13:5 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have:

13. I am responsible before God, for my behavior, responses, and choices. Ezek. 18:20 The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son

14. I will reap whatever I sow. Gal. 6:7 for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

15. The pathway to true joy is to relinquish control. 1 Peter 5:7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

16. Submission to God-ordained authority honors God and brings blessing. Hebrews 13:17 Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief…

17. Personal holiness is more important than temporal happiness. Eph. 5:27 …that [the church] should be holy and without blemish.

-Happiness is not a right.

18. God is more concerned about changing me and glorifying Himself, than about solving my problems. Rom. 8:29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son…

19. Suffering is a tool in the hand of God to conform me to the image of Jesus. 1 Pet. 5:10 But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.

20. My suffering will not last forever. 2 Cor. 4:17–18 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.

21. It’s not about me; it’s all about Him! Col. 1:16–18 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.
