Follow Me: Becoming a Disciple of Jesus

Part 8 – How can I disciple others?

Matthew 28:18-20

18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20

Two Important Observations:

  • This is the Great Commission, not the .
  • This command is for of Jesus, not just the twelve, pastors or missionaries.

Jesus us to make disciples!

18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me…. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:18, 20b

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8

29 Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness… 31 After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly. Acts 4:29,31

Question: How can I disciple others?

19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. Matthew 28:19-20a

Three Distinct Actions Required for Making Disciples:

19 go and make disciples. Matthew 28:19a

  • Going can include to share the gospel!
  • Going can include sharing the gospel everyday!

You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everyone. 2 Corinthians 3:2.

2.

19 … baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, Matthew 28:19b

16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. Matthew 3:16

38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Acts 2:38

3.

20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. Matthew 28:20

Therefore let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity, Hebrews 6:1a

is the aim of teaching, not .

18 And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit. 2 Corinthians 3:18

Jesus teaches us to make disciples by being and

34 “Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? 35 It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile; it is thrown out.”

Being SALT is what we believe.

  • Just as salt faithful disciples can the world we live in!
  • When we live Christ-honoring lives, we can for Christ in others.

24 And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. 25 Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, 2 Timothy 2:24-25

Being LIGHT is what we believe.

16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:16

14 How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? Romans 10:14

To make disciples….

  • Open your eyes to lost people in your sphere of influence.
  • Meet them where they are.
  • Listen and be a friend to them.
  • Share how God is at work in your life.
  • Invite them to follow Jesus as Savior and Lord.
  • Study God’s Word with them.
