1 Samuel 1:4-11, 27-28

The spiritual decay of the nation of Israel was linked to the absence of a king.  Immediately before 1 Samuel we have the book of Judges and we see Israel torn apart by a lack of leadership and widespread perversity.  Judges 21:25 sums it up well: “. . . there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes.” When we come to 1 Samuel we’re introduced to Hannah, who is the mother of the prophet who will designate Israel’s chosen king.
