Topic: Marriage            Series: Built on the Rock

24 Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.” (Matthew 7:24-27)

Some important truths about marriage:

1. God is the ONLY true authority on marriage.

2. Marriage is intended to further God’s Purpose.

19 For I have chosen[ him, that he may command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing righteousness and justice, so that the Lord may bring to Abraham what he has promised him.” (Genesis 18:19)

3. God must be first in my life and marriage.

4. God has a say in who I marry.

God settles the solitary in a home; he leads out the prisoners to prosperity, but the rebellious dwell in a parched land. (Psalms 68:6)

5. Satan wants a say in my marriage.

What causes fights and quarrels among you? Dont they come from your desires that battle within you? You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures. (James 4:1-3)

6. My marriage is built and sustained by The Word of God

What God says/reveals about marriages:

i. Leave and cleave.

24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. 25 And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed. (Genesis 2:24-25)

ii. Do not be unequally yoked.

14 Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? (2 Corinthians 6:14)

iii. A man is to cherish his wife.

He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the Lord. (Proverbs 18:22)

House and wealth are inherited from fathers, but a prudent wife is from the Lord. (Proverbs 19:14)

Proverbs 31:10; Ephesians 5:25

iv. God does not approve of separation/divorce.

Matthew 19:2-9 – exception given for adultery.

v. Marriage conflict is often a result of spiritual warfare.

vi. God Commands women to submit to, and respect their husbands.

Ephesians 5:22-25, Colossians 3:18-19

22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands. (Ephesians 5:22-24)

vii. God Commands men to love like Jesus.

25 Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, 26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish28 In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, 30 because we are members of his body. 31 “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.”32 This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. 33 However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband. (Ephesians 5:22-33)
