1. How would you describe either the city of Rome or the church of Rome as it relates to the background of Paul in prison in Rome?

2. How would you explain either Paul’s situation in prison or his relationship with the church in Philippi (v. 12)?

3. What do you think Paul is referring to when he says that his imprisonment has advanced the gospel (v. 12)?

4. Who are the palace guard (v. 13)? What influence did they have in the Roman Empire?

5. Why do you think that some of the church in Rome preached Christ confidently since Paul was in prison (v. 14)?

6. What are the six terms Paul uses to describe the hurtful proclamation of Christ (see vv. 15, 17, 18)? Why would some Christians in Rome want to harm Paul in this way?
