SERMON NOTES:

Martin Luther:

“John’s gospel and his first epistle, Paul’s epistles, especially those to the Romans, Galatians, Ephesians, and Peter’s first epistle, — these are the books which show Christ, and teach everything that is needed and blessed for you to know even though you never see or hear any other book or doctrine. Therefore, James epistle is a strawy epistle in comparison with them, for it has no gospel character to it.”

J. C. Ryle:

“Trials are intended to make us think, to wean us from the world, to send us to the Bible, to drive us to our knees.”

  1. TRIALS PRODUCE A  SPIRIT

James 1:2

Hebrews 12:1-2

C. S. Lewis:

“We are to be re-made. All the rabbit in us is to disappear-and then, surprisingly, we shall find underneath it all a thing we have never yet imagined: a real Man, an ageless god, a son of God, strong, radiant, wise, beautiful, and drenched in joy.”

2. TRIALS PRODUCE A  SPIRIT

James 1:2-4

Philippians 1:18:

1 Corinthians 10:13

Adoniram Judson:

“The motto of every missionary, whether preacher, printer, or schoolmaster ought to be; steadfast for life.”

Charles Spurgeon:

“The Lord gets his best soldiers out of the highlands of affliction.”

3. TRIALS PRODUCE A  SPIRIT

James 1:4

Psalm 131:1-2

Roger Staubach:

“I faced up to the issue of submission. Once I learned to submit there was harmony, fulfillment, and victory.”

4. TRIALS PRODUCE A  SPIRIT

James 1:5-8

Daniel Doriani:

“Our culture often views doubt as a noble thing. Philosophers such as Descartes use doubt as an organizing principle for their investigations, and popular culture often views doubter as courageous loners. But the Bible never views doubt as an activity or condition that is good in itself.”

James 1:2

James 1:12

Matthew 8:20

George Whitfield:

“All trials are for two ends, that we may be better acquainted with the Lord Jesus and better acquainted with our own hearts.”

Horatio Spafford:

“Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
Let this blest assurance control,
That Christ has regarded my helpless estate,
And hath shed His own blood for my soul.”
