The Promise: His Temptation

Matthew 4:1-11

  1. Temptation is a universal . 1

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. vs. 1

The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. 1 Corinthians 2:14

  1. Temptations reveal our human , spiritual , and basic . vs. 2-9

And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”  vs. 2-4

We are tempted to fulfill our needs apart from God’s .

  1. Jesus provides a transformational . 10-11

For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Hebrews 4:15

Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’” Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him. vs. 10-11

“Jesus steps into the same story that Adam stepped into, but Jesus is able to stand where Adam fell.”
