Worst Advice Ever Pt. 4 “Family Comes First”

May 2, 2021

It sounds good, but is it?

Worst Advice Ever! Family comes first.

Luke 14:26

Matthew 10:37

Prefer Him over them.

LIFE GROUP DISCUSSION

Start talking.

  • In what ways are you unique or a little different from your other family members?

Start thinking.

  • Keeping our family first seems intuitive and the right thing to do, but Jesus thought differently. What do you think Jesus was trying to say to us when he said things like this…
    • Luke 14:26 TPT
25 As massive crowds followed Jesus, he turned to them and said, 26 “When you follow me as my disciple, you must put aside your father, your mother, your wife, your sisters, your brothers—yes, you will even seem as though you hate your own life. This is the price you’ll pay to be considered one of my followers.
  • What do you think it looks like to prefer Jesus over our family? First, read this teaching from Jesus.
    • Matthew 10:37 The Message
    • 34-37 “Don’t think I’ve come to make life cozy. I’ve come to cut—make a sharp knife-cut between son and father, daughter and mother, bride and mother-in-law—cut through these cozy domestic arrangements and free you for God. Well-meaning family members can be your worst enemies. If you prefer father or mother over me, you don’t deserve me. If you prefer son or daughter over me, you don’t deserve me.

Start sharing.

  • Has your family or close friends ever made it hard for you in trying to follow Jesus? If so, how so?
  • How has Jesus blessed you and your family? Who has God added to your family from your faith community?

Start praying. Be bold, and pray with power.

  • Stop and take time to share prayer requests and pray for one another.

Start doing.

  • Get with your family and ask thins question, “How can we prefer God over one another? Flush out practically what that would look like and why it’s so important for us to do so.
  • If you don’t have family, do this with a close friend. You can also ask God as an individual, “How do you prefer you over me.”
