First Things First Pt. 5 “Others First”

How to avoid drifting.

We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. – Hebrews 2:1 NIV

Romans 10:13-15 NLT

13 For “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” 14 But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them? 15 And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent? That is why the Scriptures say, “How beautiful are the feet of messengers who bring good news!”

Philippians 2:3-4 The Passion Translation

3 Be free from pride-filled opinions, for they will only harm your cherished unity. Don’t allow self-promotion to hide in your hearts, but in authentic humility put others first and view others as more important than yourselves. 4 Abandon every display of selfishness. Possess a greater concern for what matters to others instead of your own interests.

If not you, then who?

LIFE GROUP DISCUSSION

Start talking.

  • Do you consider yourself to be more outgoing or shy, introverted, or extroverted?

Start thinking.

  • Share your thoughts on this statement: Christians are God’s plan for evangelism and there is no Plan B.
  • What do you think Paul is trying to teach us from his letter to Christians living in the city of Philippi?
    • Philippians 2:3-4 The Passion Translation – 3 Be free from pride-filled opinions, for they will only harm your cherished unity. Don’t allow self-promotion to hide in your hearts, but in authentic humility put others first and view others as more important than yourselves. 4 Abandon every display of selfishness. Possess a greater concern for what matters to others instead of your own interests.

Start sharing.

  • How does it make you feel when you think about sharing God with someone who doesn’t believe, think, or live as you do?
  • Read and discuss your thoughts on the gravity of Christians going and sharing with others that Paul is trying to get us to understand.
    • Romans 10:13-15 NLT – 13 For “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” 14 But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them? 15 And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent? That is why the Scriptures say, “How beautiful are the feet of messengers who bring good news!”
  • Share stories about a time when God used you to bless someone else by sharing with them the Good News of what God has done for you or in you.

Start praying. Be bold, and pray with power.

  • Take time to share prayer requests and pray for one another.

Start doing.

  • Begin praying and asking God to give you an opportunity to share your story and the Good News with someone who desperately needs to hear it.
