Be Wise Pt. 4 “Hold Your Tongue”

May 31, 2020

Proverbs 19:8 (TPT)
“Do yourself a favor and love wisdom. Learn all you can, then watch your life flourish
and prosper!”

Love wisdom. Learn all you can. Watch your life flourish.

Proverbs‬ ‭13:3‬ ‭TPT‬‬

Guard your words and you’ll guard your life, but if you don’t control your tongue, it will ruin everything.

‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭18:21‬ ‭MSG‬‬

“Words kill, words give life; they’re either poison or fruit—you choose.”

Nothing has the power to or a life more than words.

LIFE GROUP DISCUSSION

Start talking. Come up with a conversation starter for the group.

  • Did you ever hear to repeat this as a kid, “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.” In what ways do you find this rhyme to be inaccurate and why?

Start thinking.

  • Why do you think our words and other people’s words have such a profound impact on our lives and our view of self?
  • What do you think are some of the most powerful and helpful words a person could hear?

Start sharing.

  • What is currently your bigger struggle as it relates to words: Negative self-talk, speaking hurtful, gossiping, critical, or sarcastic words to others, or emotionally dealing with being on the receiving end of hurtful words? Explain.
  • ‭‭Read and discuss:
      • Proverbs‬ ‭13:3‬ ‭TPT‬‬ – “Guard your words and you’ll guard your life, but if you don’t control your tongue, it will ruin everything.”
      • Proverbs‬ ‭18:21‬ ‭MSG‬‬ – “Words kill, words give life; they’re either poison or fruit—you choose.”
  • Who is someone that you know you could do a better job at using your words to bring them life? What do you think they need to hear from you more often?
  • Share about someone who consistently speaks life into you with their words. What is it about them that leaves you feeling so encouraged? What is it that they say or do?
  • This past Sunday the communicator said, “Nothing has the power to ruin or restore a life more than words.” It what ways do you believe this is true?

Start praying. Be bold, and pray with power.

  • Pray for those struggling with negative self-talk. Pray for those who are struggling with hurtful words spoken into them. PRay for those who know they could do more to use their words to speak life into others.

Start doing.

  • Identify if you are currently struggling more with negative self-talk, negative talk to others, or being on the receiving end of negative talk. Share your struggle with a friend and pray with one another.
