Treasured Possession

August 1, 2021   /   Crossroads Church

“Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant,
you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples,
for all the earth is mine.” Exodus 19:5 (ESV)

“To be human is to be a disciple. God didn’t present Adam and Eve with a choice between discipleship and independence, but between following him and following Satan. We are all disciples; the only question is, of whom?” [Mark Dever: Discipling: How to Help Others Follow Jesus]

When you die what image will others have of you?

  • A bright but image of you
  • Or a bold and image of Jesus that leads to eternal life

A disciple is more than a person who has internalized a certain body of information or is practicing a set of spiritual disciplines, including sharing the gospel.

The goal of discipleship is nothing less than the of the believer’s heart, mind, affections, will, relationships, and purpose.

Titus 2:11-14

Five Factors of Discipleship

Factor 1: the historical, “has appeared”  Titus 2:11

  • vs 11 God’s grace brings salvation of all men

Factor 2: the educational, “training us”  Titus 2:12

1 John 2:16

  • Peter mentions “fleshly lusts” and tells us to “” from them (1 Pet 2:11)
  • Paul, when writing to Timothy, speaks of “foolish hurtful youthful lusts” he warns us to “” them
    (1 Tim 6:9) (2 Tim 2:22) (1 Tim 6:11; 2 Tim 2:22)
  • Now as Paul discusses “worldly lusts” are concerned, he says “ them.

How should we live?

  1. In relation to ourselves: Self-controlled
    • Exercise self-
  2. In relation to others: Righteously
    • Act justly and
    • Acknowledge the of others
    • Give consideration of our duty to others
  3. Regarding our highest relationship:
    • it’s to renounce ungodliness
    • the rights of God over our hearts.
    • A godly person seeks to as in the presence of God.

Factor 3: the prophetic, “looking for’’  Titus 2:13

Factor 4: the sacrificial, “who gave himself”  Titus 2:14

Factor 5:

Christians today are God’s (own possession) “ people” in this world.

Exodus 19:5

  • “zealous” literally means ‘ followers’’
  • We are to live with a passion for doing the good works of our savior
