SERIES: YOUR KINGDOM COME
PART 9: YOU SHOULD PRAY LIKE THIS
“Whenever you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites, because they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by people. Truly I tell you, they have their reward. But when you pray, go into your private room, shut your door, and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. When you pray, don’t babble like the Gentiles, since they imagine they’ll be heard for their many words. Don’t be like them, because your Father knows the things you need before you ask him.
“Therefore, you should pray like this: Our Father in heaven, your name be honored as holy. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And do not bring us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.
“For if you forgive others their offenses, your heavenly Father will forgive you as well. But if you don’t forgive others, your Father will not forgive your offenses.”
(Matthew 6:5-15, CSB)
- For Jesus, prayer is to be private before public.
The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.
(James 5:16, NIV)
- For Jesus, prayer is to be honest not impressive.
- Prayer is to encompass all parts of our lives.
“…if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.”
(Genesis 4:7, NIV)
Summary of the Lord’s Prayer …
- Begin with and of who God is.
- with His kingdom and His will.
- Bring your and before Him and then trust Him to be to provide for you.
- others and be to them as God has forgiven and allowed us to be reconciled to Him.
- Remember that God is over sin and we now get to live in that as well.
Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
(Philippians 4:6, CSB)
The Lord’s Prayer:
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come,
your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.
