On Quenching The Spirit and Despising Prophecies

October 11, 2020

1 Thessalonians 5:19-21

1 –  Do not Quench The Spirit

The greatest gift God has ever given to the church is the Holy Spirit of God.

John 16:13   However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for

He will not speak on His own authority,  but whatever He hears He will speak;    and He will tell you things to come.

Eph. 5:18

When you choose to reject God’s leading, you are quenching the Holy Spirit.

2 – Do not despise prophecies

prophecies are the word of God.

Sometimes prophecies brought good news, sometimes bad news.

Sometimes a  Word comes from God by way of dreams that is NOT FOR EVERYONE, or for ALL TIME … but just for you and just for now.

Example:  Acts 16:6-7   The Holy Sprit did not permit them to preach in Asia or Mysia because they were needed in Macedonia.

Prophecy is primarily preaching the Word of God.

Preaching the Word of God is not the preachers opinion.

2 Peter 1:16-21  “… no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.”

Example from Balaam: Numbers 22 v 18 “I could not go beyond the word of the Lord my God, to do less or more.”

Numbers 22:38  “… have I any power at all to say anything?   The word that God puts in my mouth, that I must speak.”

3-   Test All Things

Gods word can stand any scrutiny, any test you want to put it up against, because GODS WORD is alive and active … it’ll pass the test.

Test all things because:

Matthew 24:24  False Christs and false prophets will arise …

1 Timothy 4:1  in the later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits

2 Timothy 4:3-4   For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine … they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, …

4 –  Hold on to what is good

Rev. 3

“And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write,

‘These things says He who is holy, He who is true, “He who has the key of David, He who opens and no one shuts, and shuts and no one opens”: “I know your works. See, I have set before you an open door, and no one can shut it; for you have a little strength, have kept My word, and have not denied My name. Indeed I will make those of the synagogue of Satan, who say they are Jews and are not, but lie—indeed I will make them come and worship before your feet, and to know that I have loved you.

10 Because you have kept My command to persevere, I also will keep you from the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth.

11 Behold, I am coming quickly!

Hold fast (hold on tight to)  what you have, that no one may take your crown

12 He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God, and he shall go out no more. I will write on him the name of My God and the name of the city of My God, the New Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from My God. And I will write on him My new name.

13 “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” ’

The question is;  are you holding on to what is good?
