Jesus’ Prayer: Hallowed be Your Name
October 4, 2020 / Christ Church on HarvardJesus’ Prayer: “Hallowed be Your Name”
Matt 6:9-13
This, then, is how you should pray: “‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, 10 your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us today our daily bread. 12 Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’ Matt 6:9-13 NIV
Jesus’ prayer is a practical prayer to help us in every time of need
1 “Hallowed” is not a word we use often
Jesus – prayer doesn’t begin with us – it begins with God
2 Hallowed means “holy” or “sacred”
Lord, may your name be treated with respect and honor
because your name is sacred and holy
3 Why hallowed be Your Name? What’s in name?
In Scripture names communicate character, attributes
In Scripture God is given many names
“How majestic is your name, O Lord.” Psalm 8:1
“Some trust in chariots, and some in horses; but we will trust in the name of the Lord our God.” Psalm 20:7
And everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved; Joel 2:32 Acts 2:21 Rom 10:13 (NIV)
We “hallow” God’s name because He is holy and worthy
4 If you want to know more completely what God is like, look at Jesus
The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being’ Hebrews 1:3a (NIV)
5 Too often God’s name is unhallowed in the world today
6 Who is on the throne of your life?
7 Praying “hallowed be your name” is life impacting
Jesus’ life reminds us how far God is willing to go to reach us
