Series: Press Play — Week #3
August 29, 2021
Dr. Clayton Chisum
The last couple weeks, we talked about Peter and Cornelius, who pressed play by reaching out to those who needed to hear the gospel— stepping out. Abraham pressed play by saying “yes” to God when called— stepping forward.
Timothy pressed play by going from a nobody to somebody and being mentored by Paul— stepping up.
2 Timothy 1:5 (ESV)
#1. up!
God is calling all His followers to look up- to ask ourselves:
- Who am I looking up to?
- Who has my eye as someone I aspire to be like?
- Who is my role model in the faith?
Do you have someone like that?
2 Timothy 3:14-15 (ESV)
Who do you call coach? Who are you looking up to?
#2. up!
1 Timothy 4:12 (ESV)
We all need to grow up, in differing degrees.
Many of us are still holding on to the ledge of our faith, maybe even feeling spiritually stuck. Is this you?
God has so much in store for us than a shallow faith. We need to grow up spiritually…
1 Timothy 4:13-16 (ESV)
Where do you need to grow? How are you going to feed your growth?
Growth prepares you for what’s important. It prepares you to…
#3. up!
As you grow, God will call you to step up… and if you’ve been growing, you will be ready.
As Timothy grew, Paul gave him bigger and bigger responsibilities:
- He was first sent to several churches as Paul’s messenger.
- Then he proved himself to the point that Paul finally sent Timothy to be a pastor in Ephesus (1 Timothy 1:3). He was at a church that other churches looked to for guidance.
2 Timothy 4:1-3 (ESV)
1 Timothy 6:12 (ESV)
Ministry happened under Timothy!
There’s a cycle that as you are mentored, you grow, you step up in your faith, your leadership, your serving, and your opportunities for ministry. You will get to a point where you can be that person to others as well.
2 Timothy 2:2 (ESV)
Who do I need ?
Where do I need to ?
How can I ?
