Why Pray? (Various Scripture Passages)

January 9, 2022

IceBreaker Discussion: What is the most common reason you have heard when someone explains why they struggle with prayer? (If you are in a group setting, go around the group and answer the question: What causes you to struggle with prayer most?

Read: (Pass out these passages and have different people read them) 1 Timothy 2:8, 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, James 5:16, 2 Chronicles 7:12-16, Acts 17:24-31

Discuss:

  1. What are some constant themes that you can see throughout each of these passages, and any others related to prayer?
  2. Read Colossians 3:1-2– How can where we fix our eyes effect our prayer life? How do we battle against the flesh in this struggle?
  3. If God knows all things (past, present, and future), why does he call us to pray?
  4. React to and discuss the following statement- “Our prayer life is one of the most accurate gauges of our spiritual life. The more dependent we become on God, the more disciplined we are in prayer.”

Pray: As the most practical application period of this series, complete the following exercise before you pray:

  1. Share and write down the attributes of God
  2. Share and write down our standing before God as scripture states it (for reference: Romans 3:23, Romans 6:23, Romans 5:8)
  3. Share and write down what the lasting hope we have been given from God is. (For reference: 1 Peter 1:3-5, Ephesians 2:8-10, John 3:16-18, Romans 8:1)
  4. Share and write down what God has called us to in light of these truths. (For reference: Matthew 28:19-20, 1 Peter 3:15, Matthew 22:36-40)

Now that you have competed this exercise, answer the question- How can we pray in line with God’s character and will (aligning ourselves with Him). Then spend some time praying that way.
