Rest in the Word of the Lord (Joshua 20-21)

October 10, 2021

Icebreaker: Define rest. What is it? What does it look like? When do you experience it best? What is your perfect idea of a “restful season”?

1. Read Joshua 21:43-45

  • What aspects of the Lords character do we see in these verses?
  •  Review all that has happened up to this point. How long had Israel waited for this fulfillment? What had the nation endured?

2. Read the following texts and discuss (Exodus 33:12-15, Deuteronomy 25:17-19, Joshua 1:13)

  • Evaluate the context of each passage and discuss its implications in Joshua 21. What did it take for Israel to experience this rest? What observations can we make about how this might not have gone as some planned for it to?

Application

  • How does obedience to God’s word correlate to the experience of God given rest?
  •  What commands and promises can we live in obedience to that bring about lasting rest and peace? (Brainstorm and write down specific passages of Scripture.)

Prayer:

Share where you are struggling to embrace or see the sovereignty of the Lord right now. What promises of God do you need reminded of today, in order to have peace/rest about tomorrow? (As people share, take time to pray for them specifically. If you are studying alone, journal these out and then find and right promises of scripture to memorize and reminder yourself of each day.)
