Lessons from Jesus Part 1- How to Pray (Matthew 6:9-13)

February 6, 2022

IceBreaker Discussion: What is one thing that you wish someone would have taught you about prayer as a child? Why?

Read Matthew 6:9-13

Discuss

1. What difference can it make to pray “my father” instead of “our father”?

2. Evaluating how we pray, what is usually the focus of our prayers? Why do you think it is important that we fix our eyes vertically before we ask regarding the horizontal?

3. In western culture, how can we begin to discipline ourselves to pray for our daily need instead of our monthly or yearly want? What has to change in our thinking for this to happen?

4. Why is a focus on forgiveness important in our prayer life?

Pray: As we have broken this prayer apart, take time to pray in the order that the Lord’s prayer is written.

  • Begin by acknowledging the authority of God and honoring who he is.
  • Follow this by focusing on the eternal things that God has called us to care about most.
  • Next focus on the needs of this day, the burdens of this day. Discipline yourself not to move beyond that.
  • Spend time confessing sin and acknowledging the forgiveness that is found in Christ alone.
  • Close by praising God once more for who he is and asking for his ongoing protection against the forces of evil.
