THE COUNSELOR – 3

DO YOU WANT TO GET WELL?

Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals. Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. Here a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. [4] One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?” “Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.”Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked. John 5:1-9

Point 1: Be Aware (John 5:5-7)

THE LONGER A PROBLEM PERSISTS…

  • THE MORE DISCOURAGED YOU BECOME.
  • THE MORE EXCUSES YOU MAKE.
  • THE MORE YOU LEARN TO COMPENSATE.

Point 2: Turn & Stand (John 5:8-9)

  • Jesus’ spirit has been with you all along (Be encouraged)
  • Jesus is waiting for us to turn to Him (Just do it)
    • Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.   Revelation 3:20
  • Stand in faith & carry your mat (Identity is in Christ)
    • Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!   2 Corinthians 5:17

Point 3: Keep Walking (John 5:10-14)

  • When we carry out mat, we encourage others that Jesus heals (Go encourage)
    • 10 The Jewish leaders said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat.” 11 But he replied, “The man who made me well said to me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’ ” 12 So they asked him, “Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?” 13 The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there. John 5.10-13
  • When we exercise our faith, we get stronger & fight temptation (Own it)
    • Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.”  John 5:14
    • For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.  2 Timothy 4:8
  • When our identity in Christ, it leads us to the greatest hope
    • 1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.  Hebrews 12:1-3
