Experience the tension of Holy Week through two EXTREMES:

Extreme #1: LIFE (King Jesus brings victory)

Luke 19:37b-38a (ESV)

[Palm Sunday] …the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, 38 saying, “Blessed is the King…”

Matthew 4:24b-25a (ESV)

[Becoming Famous] …they brought him all the sick, those afflicted with various diseases and pains, those oppressed by demons, those having seizures, and paralytics, and he healed them. 25 And great crowds followed him…

John 1:4a (ESV)

[Young Disciple] In him was life…

Luke 12:15b (ESV)

[Physician] “…one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”

Matthew 7:14 (ESV)

[Eager Crowd] “For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.”

Luke 10:25b (ESV)

[Lawyer] “…Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”

Luke 18:18b (ESV)

[Rich Ruler] “…what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

John 3:15 (ESV)

[Secret Inquirer] “that whoever believes in him [Jesus] may have eternal life.”

John 4:14b (ESV)

[Social Outcast] “…the water that I will give… a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

John 6:35b (ESV)

[Miracle Seekers] “…I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger…”

John 11:25b (ESV)

[Grieving Sister] “…I am the resurrection and the life…”

John 14:6 (ESV)

[Doubting Disciple] Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

John 10:10 (ESV)

[Divided Mob] “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”

Extreme #2: DEATH (King Jesus suffers defeat)

Matthew 26:3-4 (ESV)

[Lethal Plot] Then the chief priests and the elders of the people gathered in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas, 4 and plotted together in order to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him.

Matthew 27:22b (ESV)

[Governor] “…what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” They all said, “Let him be crucified!”

Matthew 27:42 (ESV)

[Mockers] “He saved others; he cannot save himself. He is the King of Israel; let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him.”

Matthew 27:50-51 (ESV)

[Royal Death] Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit. 51 And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split.

Acts 3:15a (ESV)

[Bold Follower] “…you killed the Author of life…”

Matthew 27:59-60 (ESV)

[Generous Mourner] And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen shroud 60 and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had cut in the rock. And he rolled a great stone to the entrance of the tomb and went away.

The tense extremes of a life-giving triumphal victory and the suffering defeat of King Jesus who is now dead in a tomb.

Ecclesiastes 1:4a (NLT)

Generations come and generations go…

Ecclesiastes 3:1-2a (NIV)

There is a time for everything and a season for every activity under heaven:

a time to be born and a time to die…

Ecclesiastes 8:8a (NIV)

No man has power over the wind to contain it; so no one has power over the day of his death.

Job 14:14a (NIV)

“If a man dies will he live again?…”

Ecclesiastes 7:2b (NIV)

…death is the destiny of every man; the living should take this to heart.

John 10:10b (NIV)

“I have come that they may have life [eternal life]…”

John 3:16 (NIV)

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

John 14:1-3 (NIV)

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. 2 In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me, that you also may be where I am”

John 14:6b (ESV)

“I am the way the truth the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

1 John 5:11-12 (NIV)

And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.  12 He who has the Son has the life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.

Psalms 116:15 (NIV)

Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.

Jesus took the stinger out of death.
