The Coming Day of the Lord
2 Peter 3:10-13

10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved,
and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.

11 Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness,
12 waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn!

13 But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.

Three Certainties of the Coming Day of the Lord:
I. The Day of the Lord Will Occur When You Least Expect

10a But the day of the Lord will come like a thief,

Obadiah 1:15
For the day of the LORD is near upon all the nations. As you have done, it shall be done to you; your deeds shall return on your own head.
In other words — God is not mocked, you will reap what you sow.

Luke 4:18-19
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed,

19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
So He´s describing the salvation of God´s people.
But He´s intentionally left some of the text out.

Isaiah 61:1-2
1 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;

2 to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn;

1 Thessalonians 5:1-3
1 Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers, you have no need to have anything written to you.
2 For you yourselves are fully aware that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.

3 While people are saying, “There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.

Three Certainties of the Coming Day of the Lord:
II. The Day of The Lord Will Bring About the Destruction of the Physical World As You Know It

10b and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.

2 Peter 3:7
But by the same word the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.

Luke 12:2-5
2 The time is coming when everything will be revealed; all that is secret will be made public.

3 Whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered behind closed doors will be shouted from the housetops for all to hear!
4 “Dear friends, don’t be afraid of those who want to kill you. They can only kill the body; they cannot do any more to you.

5 But I’ll tell you whom to fear. Fear God, who has the power to kill people and then throw them into hell.

Three Certainties of the Coming Day of the Lord:
III. The Coming Day of the Lord Calls You To Live A Holy and Godly Life

11 Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness,

Isaiah 43:1-2
1 But now thus says the LORD, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.

2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you;
when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.
