Stand Firm Pt. 3 – The Return of Christ

March 28, 2021

Part 3: The Return Of Christ

2 Peter 3:1-4 NLT This is my second letter to you, dear friends, and in both of them I have tried to stimulate your wholesome thinking and refresh your memory.  2  I want you to remember what the holy prophets said long ago and what our Lord and Savior commanded through your apostles. 3  Most importantly, I want to remind you that in the last days scoffers will come, mocking the truth and following their own desires. 4  They will say, “What happened to the promise that Jesus is coming again? From before
the times of our ancestors, everything has remained the same since the world was first created.”

1. Remembering the Word of God will our doubts.

Romans 8:18-19 NLT Yet what we suffer now is nothing compared to the glory he will reveal to us later.  19  For all creation is waiting eagerly for that future day when God will reveal who his children really are.

2 Peter 3:5-7 NLT They deliberately forget that God made the heavens long ago by the word of his command, and he brought the earth out from the water and surrounded it with water.  6  Then he used the water to destroy the ancient world with a mighty flood. 7  And by the same word, the present heavens and earth have been stored up for fire. They are being kept for the day of judgment, when ungodly people will be destroyed.

2. God’s and judgment have been clearly seen and . . . will
be seen again.

2 Corinthians 6:2 NLT For God says, “At just the right time, I heard you. On the day of salvation, I helped you.” Indeed, the “right time” is now. Today is the day of salvation.

2 Peter 3:8 NLT But you must not forget this one thing, dear friends: A day is like a thousand years to the Lord, and a thousand years is like a day.

3. God doesn’t function on man’s .

2 Peter 3:9 NLT The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed but wants everyone to repent.

4. It is God’s perfect will for to go to heaven!

2 Peter 3:10 NLT But the day of the Lord will come as unexpectedly as a thief. Then the heavens will pass away with a terrible noise, and the very elements themselves will disappear in fire, and the earth and everything on it will be found to deserve judgment.

Matthew 24:36-44 NLT “However, no one knows the day or hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself. Only the Father knows. 37  “When the Son of Man returns, it will be like it was in Noah’s day. 38  In those days before the flood, the people were enjoying banquets and parties and weddings right up to the time Noah entered his boat.  39  People didn’t realize what was going to happen until the flood came and swept them all away. That is the way it will be when the Son of Man comes. 40  “Two men will be working together in the field; one will be taken, the other left.  41  Two women will be grinding flour at the mill; one will be taken, the other left. 42  “So you, too, must keep watch! For you don’t know what day your Lord is coming.  43  Understand this: If a homeowner knew exactly when a burglar was coming, he would keep watch and not permit his house to be broken into.
44  You also must be ready all the time, for the Son of Man will come when least expected.

5. We should live everyday as though Jesus Christ will return

1 Thessalonians 4:16-18 NLT 16  For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, the believers who have died will rise from their graves.  17  Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth
will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Then we will be with the Lord forever.  18  So encourage each other with these words.

1 Corinthians 15:51-52 NLT 51  But let me reveal to you a wonderful secret. We will not all die, but we will all be transformed!  52  It will happen in a moment, in the blink of an eye, when the last trumpet is blown. For when the trumpet sounds, those who have died will be raised to live forever. And we who are living will also be transformed.

2 Peter 3:11-14 NLT Since everything around us is going to be destroyed like this, what holy and godly lives you should live,  12  looking forward to the day of God and hurrying it along. On that day, he will set the heavens on fire, and the elements will melt away in the flames.  13  But we are looking forward to the new heavens and new earth he has promised, a world filled with God’s righteousness. 14  And so, dear friends, while you are waiting for these things to happen, make every effort to be found living peaceful lives that are pure and blameless in his sight.

6. We should focus on building treasures rather than
earthly ones.

Matthew 6:19-21 NLT “Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. 20  Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal.  21  Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.

2 Peter 3:15 NLT And remember, our Lord’s patience gives people time to be saved. This is what our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you with the wisdom God gave him—

7. We are commissioned to lead others to Christ.

Matthew 28:18-20 NLT Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth.  19  Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.  20  Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you.
And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

2 Peter 3:16-17 NLT speaking of these things in all of his letters. Some of his comments are hard to understand, and those who are ignorant and unstable have twisted his letters to mean something quite different, just as they do with other parts of Scripture. And this will result in their destruction. 17  You already know these things, dear friends. So be on guard; then you will not be carried away by the errors of these wicked people and lose your own secure footing.

8. We must our faith from false teaching.

1 Thessalonians 5:6-8 NLT 6  So be on your guard, not asleep like the others. Stay alert and be clearheaded.  7  Night is the time when people sleep and drinkers get drunk.  8  But let us who live in the light be clearheaded, protected by the armor of faith and love, and wearing as our helmet the confidence of our salvation.

2 Peter 3:18 NLT 18  Rather, you must grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. All glory to him, both now and forever! Amen.

9. Spiritual growth is ESSENTIAL.
