When we think of one's last words there are some very memorable examples:
Frank Sinatra said "I'm losing it."
William Seward, U.S. Secretary of State, when asked if he had any last words replied, "Nothing, only love one another."
Richard Mellon, the multimillionaire president of Alcoa, played a 7 decade long game of tag with his brother, Andrew. On his deathbed he called his brother over and said, "Last tag."
Sir Isaac Newton, who formulated the theory of universal gravity, said "I don't know what I may seem to the world, but as to myself I seem to have been only a boy playing on the seashore and diverting myself now and then in finding a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than the ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me."
It is worth considering what was passing through the minds of individuals as their life breath was passing from them. We have a record of what passed through the lips of Jesus as he suffered in agony through the final hours of the cross. What Jesus said there gives us great insight into the nature of the agony and the pain of the cross and the consolation of completing the purpose of God. May God bless us as we Journey to the cross and the empty tomb this Easter Season 2023. May we each become more grateful for His sacrifice and may we all be prepared to respond in like manner during the days of our own suffering.
