Joy on the Journey

Part 4 – Thinking Like Jesus

Philippians 2:1-11

I plead with Euodia and I plead with Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord. Philippians 4:2

Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:

Who, being in very nature God,

    did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;

rather, he made himself nothing

by taking the very nature of a servant,

    being made in human likeness.

And being found in appearance as a man,

    he humbled himself

    by becoming obedient to death—

        even death on a cross!

Therefore God exalted him to the highest place

and gave him the name that is above every name,

10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,

in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,

to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:1-11.

Steps we can take to experience unity:

1) Recognize that true unity is found !

Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Philippians 2:1-2

  • in the original language is the idea of Christ coming alongside us to help, exhort or even inspire us to express the traits that He embodies.
  • in the original language paints the picture of Christ, and the Spirit, whispering gently in our ear’s to spur us on to live out these vital traits.

2) Cultivate true unity when by like Christ.

then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Philippians 2:2

  • This phrase one spirit is the idea of being “” and it describes people who are knit together, woven together, in harmony.
  • This term means “intent on one purpose.”

In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Philippians 2:5.

3) Express true unity by like Christ.

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. Philippians 2:3-4

  • is the core cause of disunity.
  • is at the heart of selfishness.
  • must inspire our thoughts and actions to experience true unity.

Two characteristics of a humble person:

  • A humble person

6 Who, being in very nature God,

    did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;

rather, he made himself nothing

by taking the very nature of a servant,

being made in human likeness. Philippians 2:6-7

  • A humble person .

Philippians 2:8-11
