Sermon on the Mount

Part 11- Restoring Others

Matthew 7:1-5

“Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. Matthew 7:1-5

Breaking News: People are not

How do we respond to a fellow Believer who has veered off track, taken a wrong turn, headed down the wide path of destruction?

1. We don’t judge because we too are .

“Do not judge, or you too will be judged.” Matthew 7:1

What Jesus is not teaching when He commands: “Do not judge.”

  • Jesus is not teaching to laws, courts and judges.
  • Jesus is not teaching to turn a to another’s faults and failures.
  • Jesus is not teaching to refuse to between right and wrong or good and evil.

To interpret Jesus’ teaching here without these obvious observations would be…

  • Hypocritical and .
  • Contrary to our God-given ability to make .
  • Outside of Christ’s call to be .

While Jesus’ followers can be , we can’t be .

Censorious doesn’t mean to assess people critically or discerningly, but to judge them .

  • A censorious critic is a who enjoys seeking out other’s failings.
  • A censorious critic is and destructive towards others.
  • A censorious critic sets themselves up as a sitting in judgement of others. .

is a role that reserved for God alone.

Who are you to judge someone else’s servant? To their own master, servants stand or fall. Romans 14:4a

4 …It is the Lord who judges me. Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait until the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of the heart. 1 Corinthians 4:4-5

We do not to , because we are among the .

For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. Matthew 7:2

You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge another, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things. Romans 2:1

2. We don’t judge because judging another is .

“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? Matthew 7:3-4

To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everyone else, Jesus told this parable: 10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’

13 “But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’

14 “I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” Luke 18:9-14

3. We of your own failures, then lovingly help others who have also failed.

You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. Matthew 7:5

15 “If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over. Matthew 18:15.

Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. Galatians 6:1
