The Blessed Life

Part 6 – Pure in Heart

Matthew 5:8

Guest Speaker: Dan Roseman

Jesus gives the Beatitudes as part of his Sermon on the Mount where he teaches the surprising ways his followers are to live in order to have a blessed life.

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.” Matthew 5:8

A pure heart refers to a heart that’s free from moral guilt. No one is free from moral guilt through their own work, even that is a gift of God. Jesus even told his disciples that they were clean… “because of the word I have spoken to you.” John 15:3

3 Characteristics of an Impure Heart and 1 Reward of a Pure Heart

1) An Impure Heart is

1 Surely God is good to Israel,
    to those who are pure in heart.

2 But as for me, my feet had almost slipped;
    I had nearly lost my foothold.

3 For I envied the arrogant
    when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

4 They have no struggles;

their bodies are healthy and strong.

5 They are free from common human burdens;

they are not plagued by human ills.

6 Therefore pride is their necklace;

they clothe themselves with violence. Psalm 73:1-6

The Pure in Heart are content with the life God has given them instead of longing for others’ success.

2) An Impure Heart is

13 Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure

    and have washed my hands in innocence.

14 All day long I have been afflicted,

 and every morning brings new punishments.” Psalm 73:13-14

3) An Impure Heart is

15 If I had spoken out like that,
    I would have betrayed your children.

16 When I tried to understand all this,
    it troubled me deeply

17 till I entered the sanctuary of God;
    then I understood their final destiny.

18 Surely you place them on slippery ground;
    you cast them down to ruin.

19 How suddenly are they destroyed,
    completely swept away by terrors!

20 They are like a dream when one awakes;
    when you arise, Lord,
    you will despise them as fantasies.”
Psalm 73:15-20

It is so easy to spend your entire life focused only on this life, but there’s so much more.

4) The Pure in Heart

25 Whom have I in heaven but you?

    And earth has nothing I desire besides you.

26 My flesh and my heart may fail,

    but God is the strength of my heart

    and my portion forever.” Psalm 73:25-26

Tim Keller the week before he died: “I’m thankful for all the people who’ve prayed for me over the years. I’m thankful for my family, that loves me. I’m thankful for the time God has given me, but I’m ready to see Jesus. I can’t wait to see Jesus. Send me home.”
