Oops: Did I Marry the Wrong Person? – Week 1: “What’s Marriage For?”

September 29, 2024

Big Idea: God designed marriage—not for our personal —but for our mutual

1. Marriage only works when two the same purpose

Two become partners – So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.  28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over…every living thing that moves on the earth” – Genesis 1:27-28 (ESV)

Two become teammates – Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him” – Genesis 2:18 (ESV)

Biblical marriage = Team (your last name)

Two become one – Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. 25 And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed – Genesis 2:24-25 (ESV)

2. Marriage only works when two the same problems

Hiding –Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths – Genesis 3:7 (ESV)

Blaming –The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate” – Gen 3:12 (ESV)

Competing –To the woman he said “I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children.  Your desire shall be contrary to your husband, but he shall rule over you” – Genesis 3:16 (ESV)
