The Unshakable Kingdom Part 7: Remembering The King

My Highlight

On Sunday we took communion and Pastor Lennon preached about being “Remembering the King”. Looking back at your notes from Sunday’s message, what was an important thought for you?

My Story

If you have decided to follow Jesus, briefly share how you came to realize you needed Christ to save you.

This Is God’s Word

Spend some time before Life Group really looking at this passage:

Exodus 12:1–14 INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE PASSOVER

The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, “This month is to be the beginning of months for you; it is the first month of your year. Tell the whole community of Israel that on the tenth day of this month they must each select an animal of the flock according to their fathers’ families, one animal per family. If the household is too small for a whole animal, that person and the neighbor nearest his house are to select one based on the combined number of people; you should apportion the animal according to what each will eat. You must have an unblemished animal, a year-old male; you may take it from either the sheep or the goats. You are to keep it until the fourteenth day of this month; then the whole assembly of the community of Israel will slaughter the animals at twilight. They must take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and the lintel of the houses where they eat them. They are to eat the meat that night; they should eat it, roasted over the fire along with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. Do not eat any of it raw or cooked in boiling water, but only roasted over fire—its head as well as its legs and inner organs. 10 You must not leave any of it until morning; any part of it left until morning you must burn. 11 Here is how you must eat it: You must be dressed for travel, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand. You are to eat it in a hurry; it is the Lord’s Passover.

12 “I will pass through the land of Egypt on that night and strike every firstborn male in the land of Egypt, both people and animals. I am the Lord; I will execute judgments against all the gods of Egypt. 13 The blood on the houses where you are staying will be a distinguishing mark for you; when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No plague will be among you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.

14 “This day is to be a memorial for you, and you must celebrate it as a festival to the Lord. You are to celebrate it throughout your generations as a permanent statute.

Let’s Go Deeper

QUESTION: There was nothing light-hearted about what was going on in this passage. What was the larger context? In your own words, how would you describe the scene described here in Exodus 12?

QUESTION: Exodus 12:12-13 says “I will pass through the land of Egypt on that night and strike every firstborn male in the land of Egypt, both people and animals. I am the Lord; I will execute judgments against all the gods of Egypt. The blood on the houses where you are staying will be a distinguishing mark for you; when I see the blood, I will pass over you.

The Israelites needed a sacrificial lamb to spare themselves from the angel of death who was coming to judge Egypt. But our situation is different. Why do we need a “sacrificial lamb,” and why Jesus?

2 QUESTIONS: Not just any animal was fit for sacrifice, as verse 5 says, You must have an unblemished animal”. Read 1 Peter 1:17-19. What connection did Peter make between Jesus and the Passover lamb?

While the notion of offering sacrifices may seem foreign to some, it is something that people throughout history have felt necessary in reaching out to “the gods.” In the Bible we find the truth behind ideas of sacrifice. In your own words, how would you try to explain the significance of a beautiful, spotless thing being sacrificed for the ugly deeds of sinful people?

QUESTION: The sacrifice of Christ for us is a staggering act of sacrificial love—one that we could NEVER earn or deserve. Think about the people and situations in your life. What situations require you to give real substitutionary, sacrificial love? Be specific.

QUESTION: In Exodus 12:14 God speaks about the Passover to Israel, saying This day is to be a memorial for you, and you must celebrate it as a festival to the Lord. You are to celebrate it throughout your generations as a permanent statute.” In our passage from Sunday’s message, Luke 22, Jesus “took bread, gave thanks, broke it, gave it to them, and said, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” Jesus gave his followers a similar command as God gave Israel! Does understanding the Passover give your understanding of communion any new layers of meaning? How so?

Let’s Pray

Lord, may we never take your sacrifice for granted. May we never approach communion too casually…
