The Radical Life

Living the Words of Jesus

Radical Judgment

Matthew 7:1-6

Jesus’ Words on Judging others

  1. Avoid Hypercritical Judgement

Do not judge Matthew 7:1a

Because I’ll be judged how I judge others

“Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. Matthew 7:1-2

  1. Avoid Hypocritical Judgement

“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, Matthew 7:3-4

When Judging is Appropriate

  1. When It first produces a change in me

You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye Matthew 7:5a

  1. When it motivates me to help others

and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. Matthew 7:5b

Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. Galatians 6:1-2

Help Others Personally

Help Others Gently

Help Others Carefully

Help Others Lovingly

  1. When it’s shared with the right people

“Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces. Matthew 7:6

Warn a divisive person once, and then warn them a second time. After that, have nothing to do with them.  Titus 3:10

The Bottom Line:

Judge Others the way I desire to be judged by them

So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets. Matthew 7:12
