Response – Speak, Lord

Response  – Speak, Lord

Pastor Blake Hanson | 8.16.26

Hebrews 1:1–2 (NIV)

1In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways,

2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe.

A right response begins with what God has already .

Primary Ways God Communicates Today:

1.   Revelation of

Colossians 1:15 (NIV)

15The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.

2.  Authority of

2 Timothy 3:16 (NIV)

16All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,

3.  The

John 14:26 (NIV)

26But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

THE RESPONSE: LISTENING

Biblical Listening: is hearing God’s word and your life.

1 Samuel 2:12 (NIV)

12Eli’s sons were scoundrels; they had no regard for the Lord.

1 Samuel 2:25 (NIV)

25His sons, however, did not listen to their father’s rebuke, for it was the Lord’s will to put them to death.

1 Samuel 3:10 (NIV)

10The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”

LISTENING GIVES TO GOD

1 Samuel 3:4–8 (NIV)

4Then the Lord called Samuel. Samuel answered, “Here I am.”

5And he ran to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” But Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.” So he went and lay down.

6Again the Lord called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” “My son,” Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.”

7Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord: The word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him.

8A third time the Lord called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” Then Eli realized that the Lord was calling the boy.

LISTENING SURRENDERS MY ANSWER IN

1 Samuel 3:9–10 (NIV)

9So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’ ” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

10The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”

Luke 1:38 (NIV)

38“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.

Luke 22:42 (NIV)

42“Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.”

LISTENING STARTS WITH GOD’S CLEAR

1 Samuel 3:15–18 (NIV)

15Samuel lay down until morning and then opened the doors of the house of the Lord. He was afraid to tell Eli the vision,

16but Eli called him and said, “Samuel, my son.” Samuel answered, “Here I am.”

17“What was it he said to you?” Eli asked. “Do not hide it from me. May God deal with you, be it ever so severely, if you hide from me anything he told you.”

18So Samuel told him everything, hiding nothing from him. Then Eli said, “He is the Lord; let him do what is good in his eyes.”

James 1:22 (NIV)

22Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

1 Samuel 3:19–21 (NIV)

19The Lord was with Samuel as he grew up, and he let none of Samuel’s words fall to the ground.

20And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba recognized that Samuel was attested as a prophet of the Lord.

21The Lord continued to appear at Shiloh, and there he revealed himself to Samuel through his word.
