You Asked For It: Receiving the Power of The Holy Spirit

Pastor Blake Hanson | 5.17.26

Acts 1:4–8 (NLT)

4Once when he was eating with them, he commanded them, “Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift he promised, as I told you before.

5John baptized with water, but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”

6So when the apostles were with Jesus, they kept asking him, “Lord, has the time come for you to free Israel and restore our kingdom?”

7He replied, “The Father alone has the authority to set those dates and times, and they are not for you to know.

8But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Desire alone is not enough to .

RECEIVING THE HOLY SPIRIT…

John 7:37–38 (NLT)

37On the last day, the climax of the festival, Jesus stood and shouted to the crowds, “Anyone who is thirsty may come to me!

38Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.’ ”

Acts 2:38–39 (NLT)

38Peter replied, “Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

39This promise is to you, to your children, and to those far away—all who have been called by the Lord our God.”

STARTS WHEN BELIEVERS WANT MORE THAN THE .

Ephesians 1:13 (NLT)

13And now you Gentiles have also heard the truth, the Good News that God saves you. And when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom he promised long ago.

Acts 2:4 (NLT)

4And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.

Acts 8:17 (NLT) – Peter and John to Samaria

17Then Peter and John laid their hands upon these believers, and they received the Holy Spirit.

Acts 8:15–17 (NLT)

15As soon as they arrived, they prayed for these new believers to receive the Holy Spirit.

16The Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them, for they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

17Then Peter and John laid their hands upon these believers, and they received the Holy Spirit.

SHAPED BY GOD’S OVER PERSONAL EXPERIENCES.

Acts 17:11 (NLT)

11And the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul’s message. They searched the Scriptures day after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth.

Mark 7:8–9 (NLT)

8For you ignore God’s law and substitute your own tradition.”

9Then he said, “You skillfully sidestep God’s law in order to hold on to your own tradition.

45The Jewish believers who came with Peter were amazed that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles, too.

46For they heard them speaking in other tongues and praising God…

18Instantly something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he regained his sight. Then he got up and was baptized.

1 Corinthians 14:18 (NLT)

18I thank God that I speak in tongues more than any of you.

Practical Way To Receive The Spirit

1.

Luke 11:13 (NLT)

13So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him.”

2.

John 7:38–39 (NLT)

38Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.’ ”

39(When he said “living water,” he was speaking of the Spirit, who would be given to everyone believing in him. But the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet entered into his glory.)

3.

Galatians 3:1–2 (NLT)

1Oh, foolish Galatians! Who has cast an evil spell on you? For the meaning of Jesus Christ’s death was made as clear to you as if you had seen a picture of his death on the cross.

2Let me ask you this one question: Did you receive the Holy Spirit by obeying the law of Moses? Of course not! You received the Spirit because you believed the message you heard about Christ.

4.

Acts 2:4 (NLT)

4And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.

5.

Acts 4:31 (ESV)

31And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness.
