Sola Oratio – By Prayer Alone
November 12, 2025Sola Oratio – by Prayer Alone
Pastor Steve Anderson | 11.12.25
Sola Scriptura (Scripture alone)
2 Timothy 3:16
16 All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.
Solus Christus (Christ alone)
Acts 4:11-12
11 For Jesus is the one referred to in the Scriptures, where it says,‘The stone that you builders rejected has now become the cornerstone.
12 There is salvation in no one else! God has given no other name under heaven by which we must be saved.”
Sola Gratia (Grace alone)
Ephesians 2:8-9
8 God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God.
9 Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.
Sola Fide (Faith alone)
Romans 10:9-10
9 If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
10 For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved.
Soli Deo Gloria (To God alone be the glory)
1 Peter 4:10-11
10 God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another……
11 Then everything you do will bring glory to God through Jesus Christ. All glory and power to him forever and ever! Amen.
Romans 11:36
36 For everything comes from him and exists by his power and is intended for his glory. All glory to him forever!
Sola Oratio (by Prayer Alone)
“It is possible to move men, through God, by prayer alone.” Hudson Taylor
“if you would enter that Province, you must go forward on your knees,” Hudson Taylor
“When we work, we work. When we pray, God works.” Hudson Taylor
Prayer Provides Empowerment for Action
your day with prayer FIRST
“Do not have your concert first, and then tune your instrument afterwards. Begin the day with the Word of God and prayer, and get first of all into harmony with Him.” Hudson Taylor
Practice Solitary Prayer AND Prayer
Jesus Encouraged Prayer
Matthew 6:6
6 ”But when you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind you, and pray to your Father in private. Then your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.
Luke 5:15-16
15 …..the report of his (Jesus’) power spread even faster, and vast crowds came to hear him preach and to be healed of their diseases.
Luke 5:16
16 But Jesus often withdrew to the wilderness for prayer.
Scripture Affirms The Power of Praying
Acts 2:42
42 All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper[a]), and to prayer.
Matthew 18:19-20
19 “I also tell you this: If two of you agree here on earth concerning anything you ask, my Father in heaven will do it for you.
20 For where two or three gather together as my followers,[a] I am there among them.”
2 Corinthians 1:9-11
11 In fact, we expected to die. But as a result, we stopped relying on ourselves and learned to rely only on God, who raises the dead.
10 And he did rescue us from mortal danger, and he will rescue us again. We have placed our confidence in him, and he will continue to rescue us.
11 And you are helping us by praying for us. Then many people will give thanks because God has graciously answered so many prayers for our safety.
Acts 4: 23-24, 29-31
23 As soon as they were freed, Peter and John returned to the other believers and told them what the leading priests and elders had said.
24 When they heard the report, all the believers lifted their voices together in prayer to God….…
29 “And now, O Lord, hear their threats, and give us, your servants, great boldness in preaching your word.
30 Stretch out your hand with healing power; may miraculous signs and wonders be done through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”
31 After this prayer, the meeting place shook, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. Then they preached the word of God with boldness.
The power of prayer lies not in the number of people praying but in the faithfulness and sovereignty of the God who hears.
