The Hungry & Thirsty

Pastor Blake Hanson | 11.2.25

God wants me to be .

(GK Makarios): happy, fortunate, blissful (9x)

Matthew 5:3–12 (ESV)

3“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

4“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

5“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

6“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

7“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

8“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

9“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

10“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11“Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.

12Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

If you crave what’s right, you’ll be ; if you crave what’s easy, you’ll stay .

THREE COMMON EASY BUT EMPTY CRAVINGS

Isaiah 14:14 (ESV)

14I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.’

Daniel 4:30 (ESV)

30 “Is not this great Babylon, which I have built by my mighty power as a royal residence and for the glory of my majesty?”

Luke 12:16–120 (ESV)

16And he told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man produced plentifully,

17and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’

18And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods.

19And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.” ’

20But God said to him, ‘Fool…

THREE QUESTIONS TO ASK ABOUT MY PERSONAL CRAVINGS…

1.  AM I OVER THINGS THAT PLEASE GOD?

Matthew 5:6 (ESV)

6“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

How to create a hunger and thirst for righteousness:

Begin a with Jesus

John 14:6–7 (ESV)

6Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

7If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”

Know your and more

John 8:31–32 (ESV)

31So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples,

32and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

2.  WHAT AM I CURRENTLY THAT IS SPIRITUALLY UNHEALTHY?

Two Unhealthy Consumptions

junk food.

Matthew 23:5–7 (NLT)

5“Everything they do is for show. On their arms they wear extra wide prayer boxes with Scripture verses inside, and they wear robes with extra long tassels.

6 And they love to sit at the head table at banquets and in the seats of honor in the synagogues.

7 They love to receive respectful greetings as they walk in the marketplaces, and to be called ‘Rabbi.’

junk food

Galatians 5:19–21 (ESV)

19Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality,

20idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions,

21envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

3.  IS MY HUNGER LEADING ME TO FULFILL MY GOD GIVEN ?

“Jesus isn’t instructing people to be hungry and thirsty for righteousness to keep it personal but to make it purposeful.”

Discovering Your God Given Purpose:

1.  Focus on relationship before

Psalm 57:2 (ESV)

2I cry out to God Most High, to God who fulfills his purpose for me.

2.   yourself in God’s word

Psalm 119:105 (ESV)

105Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

3.  Identify passions and

Philippians 2:13 (ESV)

13for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.

Psalm 107:9 (NLT)

9For he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.

Matthew 5:6 (ESV)

6“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
