 Poor Enough to Be Happy

Pastor Blake Hanson | 10.5.25

God wants me to be .

(GK Makarios): happy, fortunate, blissful

Matthew 5:3–12 (ESV)

3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

5 “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

10 “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.

12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

TWO MISUNDERSTANDINGS ABOUT HAPPINESS

1.  Some think God isn’t with my happiness.

2.  We can find happiness God.

BEING IN LEADS TO HAPPINESS.

WHAT DOES POOR IN SPIRIT HAPPINESS LOOK LIKE?

1.   POOR IN SPIRIT HAPPINESS IS ON GOD WHILE ACKNOWLEDGING MY SPIRITUAL POVERTY.

John 15:5 (ESV)

5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

“When we are occupied with God, the least actions we do become greater than the highest worldly tasks.” – Brother Lawrence

2.  POOR IN SPIRIT HAPPINESS IS FILLING OUR LIVES WITH HUMILITY,  WHILE EMPTYING OUR LIVES OF PRIDE.

John 3:30 (ESV)

30 He must increase, but I must decrease.”

Filling My Life With Humility

  • Turn my eyes off and look to Jesus.

Hebrews 12:2 (ESV)

2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

  • Remove areas of .

Proverbs 16:18 (ESV)

18 Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.

  • Ask God for .

Colossians 3:12 (ESV)

12 Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience,

3.  POOR IN SPIRIT HAPPINESS LOOKS , NOT AROUND.

Isaiah 6:5 (ESV)

5 And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!”

Matthew 5:3 (ESV)

3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
