COMPASSION
August 3, 2025COMPASSION
Tim Elie 8.3.25
Matthew 9:36 But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd.
“Biblical orthodoxy without compassion is surely the ugliest thing in the world.” -Francis Schaefer
“Compassion will cure more sins than condemnation.” -Henry Ward Beecher
97% of Christians will never share the plan of salvation with one unbeliever EVER in their entire lifetime
90% of unbelievers will NEVER come to our churches
75% are willing to LISTEN to a Christian talk about their faith.
WHY DON’T WE TALK WITH THE LOST?
1. Not knowing what to say
2. Fear of rejection
3. Lack of role models
4. Lack of Christ’s compassion
FOUR WAYS TO GROW COMPASSION
1. Renew intimacy with God
Psalm 126:5-6
Psalm 126:5 Those who sow in tears shall reap in joy.
Psalm 126:6 He who continually goes forth weeping, bearing seed for sowing, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.
2. Resolve to be friends with sinners
Luke 5:32 “I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”
3. Receive the mantle of responsibility for personal evangelism
Acts 1:8 “You will receive power… and you will be my witnesses!”
4. Renounce indifference
Ephesians 5:16-17 (GNT) “Make good use of every opportunity you have, because these are evil days.
Ephesians 5:17 (GNT) Don’t be fools, then, but try to find out what the Lord wants you to do.”
WHAT IS COMPASSION?
Mercy, Pity and Concern
IN ACTION
How can we show the compassion of Jesus?
1. We must what Jesus sees.
Matthew 9:36 But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd.
2. We must what Jesus does.
Matthew 9:35 Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.
3. We must what Jesus feels.
Matthew 9:36 But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them
4. We must what Jesus prays.
Matthew 9:37-38 “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few.
Matthew 9:38 Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.
Love is a choice, not a feeling.
Feelings are not always our friend.
OUR ASSIGNMENT
Colossians 3:12 (NIV) “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion,…”
Jude 1:22-23 (NLT) “And you must show mercy to those whose faith is wavering.
Jude 23 (NLT) Rescue others by snatching them from the flames of judgment. Show mercy to still others, but do so with great caution, hating the sins that contaminate their lives.”
COMPASION IN ACTION
1. List 3 people whom you will start praying for their salvation.
2. Write down a practical work of compassion you can be involved in:
1. Widows & orphan ministry
2. Help the poor
3. Sponsor a child

5. Short-term outreaches
6. Become an EVERYDAY WITNESS
