James #2: Faith Works in My Temptations

June 16, 2024

James #2: Faith Works in My Temptations
Pastor Blake Hanson | James 1.12-18 | 6.16.24

James 1:2–3 (NIV)

2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds,

3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.

James 1:14 (NIV)

14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed.

Trials outside you temptation within you.

How does faith work when I’m tempted?

Faith shows us joy is not found in .

James 1:9–11 (NIV)

9 Believers in humble circumstances ought to take pride in their high position.

10 But the rich should take pride in their humiliation—since they will pass away like a wild flower.

11 For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed. In the same way, the rich will fade away even while they go about their business.

Your is not your .

Isaiah 40:8 (NIV)

8 The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.”

Luke 4:18 (NIV)

18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor…

2 Corinthians 8:9 (NIV)

9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.

Faith shows us joy is not found in .

James 1:12–15 (NIV)

12 Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him. (obey him)

13 When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone;

14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed.

15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.

Genesis 3:12 (NIV)

12 The man said, “The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”

“To err is human, but to blame it on the divine is even more human.”

Faith shows us joy comes from God more than it comes from life.

James 1:16–18 (NIV)

16 Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters.

17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

18 He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created.

Romans 15:13 (NIV)

13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
