A parable is a story that illustrates a truth. Their purpose is to convey one truth. WHY DID JESUS TEACH IN PARABLES? Jesus’ use of parables had three purposes: Parables truth from self-righteous people who felt they didn’t need a Savior or that Jesus was not the Savior Parables truth to those who with childlike faith were eager to learn and follow Jesus Parables the way people thought about something What we see in parables is judgement and mercy together. WHAT BINDS ALL THE PARABLES TOGETHER IN MATTHEW 13? The of Heaven is what binds the parables together in Matthew 13. The Kingdom of Heaven is the redemptive or of God thru Christ. God is indeed sowing Israel again, building His kingdom, but it is not like what people expected: It is not by a conquering King thru political defeat, but by a conquering King thru death. This of the Kingdom of Heaven is primarily what the parables in Matthew 13 are about. The rest of the NT shows the of the kingdom as Jesus’ disciples spend their lives bringing people into the kingdom thru faith in the gospel. You and I today are tasked with living Spirit-filled lives to the glory of God under the reign and rule of our God before a watching world, and thru our lives the kingdom to grow. MAIN POINT: of Heart Health NOTE THIS – Same seed, thrown same way, but accomplishes totally results. When you put all four accounts together and their explanation we learn that the soil represents a person’s . Jesus offers us a picture of 4 hearts: heart heart heart heart The difference in the crop has nothing to do with the . The difference in the crop has nothing to do with the . What Jesus is teaching is that the ability and desire to receive the seed is symptomatic of the of your heart. How someone who was listening to Jesus’ teaching to the truth separated those who believed from those who didn’t believe. You and I need to realize that we must cultivate our heart so that it will be fertile ground that receives God’s Word and allows the Word to produce fruit. Even now as believers, blessing comes thru living joyfully under God’s rule thru to the Word. APPLICATION Ask yourself: How do I respond to the Word? Which soil best represents my response to the Word? What does my response to the Word tell about my heart? Does my life exhibit fruit? May this us to see the need to constantly till the soil of our own hearts.
