The Church at Odessa Ethic of the Kingdom: True Righteousness Archived – November 12, 2023 View This Week’s Note View All Past Notes View This Note w/o Blanks Main Scripture Reference(s) Matthew 5:17-20 Ethic of the Kingdom: True Righteousness November 12, 2023 / Chris Basham / Matthew 5:17-20 MAIN POINT The ETHIC of the KINGDOM: True Matthew’s use of the word “fulfill” regarding Christ and the Law is meant to say that the Law and the Prophets to Christ prophetically and is brought to its in Christ as the one who represents TRUE RIGHTEOUSNESS. The righteousness Jesus is talking about is the righteousness that followers of Jesus are to in response to God’s commands from the heart. There are at least three ways in which the Law points to Christ: There are in the Law that point to Jesus. The Law points to Jesus thru the of the Israelite religious system. The function of the Law also points to Christ’s teaching ministry. True righteousness requires obedience characterized by the love of God. These verses and the rest of the OT show us that God always intended Israel to obey Him out of their for Him thru a transformed heart. APPLICATION Be on the alert that for us today there still is a strong temptation to come up with our rules and standards of TRUE RIGHTEOUSNESS apart from what the Word actually says, for our standards to become the standard by which we judge people. Be on the alert that there is also a temptation for us to back to the Law to guide our actions and righteousness as New Covenant believers. There are two ways the law can be fulfilled or satisfied: Obey it Pay the for not obeying it. Christ alone offers us the TRUE RIGHTEOUSNESS God Under the New Covenant we are governed by a love for God and others, which the entire Law. Praise the Lord that when it comes to our salvation, Christ TRUE RIGHTEOUSNESS for us thru the work on the cross, and now He calls believers to follow Him and let our shine before men so that God might get the glory, fueled by grace.
