The Church at Odessa The Herald of the King Archived – October 15, 2023 View This Week’s Note View All Past Notes View This Note w/o Blanks Main Scripture Reference(s) Matthew 3:1-17 The Herald of the King October 15, 2023 / Chris Basham / Matthew 3:1-17 MAIN POINT The of the King John the Baptist’s job as a herald was to that the KING is coming so that people would be ready for it. They were to get ready for Jesus’ arrival by of their sin. Repentance is a of heart and lifestyle that reflects that seen thru confession of sin. Repenting of your sin results in a new kingdom of your life. Baptism is a of any personal righteousness as a means of salvation and pictures a trust in the righteousness of Christ thru faith and repentance. For a Jew to be baptized was equal to them confessing the of Judaism to save them from their sins. Both Jews and Gentiles alike were required to prepare for Messiah’s appearance in the same manner: repent of the in which they had formerly trusted (self righteousness versus Christ righteousness) their sins be like the Gentiles who became Jewish proselytes. John makes two things clear here with regards to the coming of the Kingdom of Heaven: God’s Kingdom will bring to anyone who does not repent (3:8-10) Israel’s repentance was for sin but also for trusting in man-made Faith alone by grace alone in Christ alone God’s Kingdom is with the arrival of Jesus (3:11-12) John the Baptist’s entire existence is centered around people to Christ and not himself. Why would Jesus be baptized? Jesus with believers thru His baptism Jesus provides an for believers thru His baptism God Jesus as His Son at Jesus’ baptism At Jesus’ baptism God the Father that Jesus is His Son, King of the Jews and of the whole world. APPLICATION Our message on behalf of our KING is repent of your sin and rest in Christ’s because He is coming back. Paul reminds us that God is using all circumstances for the greater of the gospel. What has been graciously left for us to do while we wait is the to the world of the glorious gospel of the KING. The we herald is that Jesus has come and made a way thru His death and resurrection for our sin to be rightly forgiven by God, thus we can be reconciled to God and spend eternity with Him in heaven in the New Earth. The we herald is that if you refuse this offer from God, you will be judged by God for your sin and you will spend eternity in Hell being rightly punished due your sin and rebellion towards God. “The beginning of true nobility comes when a person ceases to be interested in the judgment of others and becomes interested in the judgment of God.” Our today as it was for John is to HERALD the KING and His GOSPEL in everything you do.
