With this genealogy, Matthew is showing right from the start that Jesus is Israel’s KING and Herod is not. Matthew uses this genealogy to show that Jesus is the of the entire OT and at the same time something new. In Jesus Christ a new beginning, a new humanity, a is being formed by God. 2 Cor. 5:17 says “therefore if anyone is in Christ they are a new creation”. Jesus’ arrival not only brought blessing for Israel, but brought blessing to the world. Matthew’s genealogy is highlighting the origin of Jesus. Jesus’ fulfills the promises of the KING Jesus was conceived as was prophesied of Israel’s KING. Jesus did not come as KING to bring freedom from Rome but from sin and its penalty.
